A panel discussion featuring director Bong Joon-ho, along with Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok, was held to delve into the universe of the series Hellbound. This event occurred shortly after the release of the show's second season and was moderated by film critic Lee Dong-jin. The session attracted over 200 attendees and was also available via live stream.
Bong Joon-ho, known for his work on films like Parasite and Okja, expressed his admiration for Hellbound, describing it as a masterpiece. "It almost made me feel like I was burning in hell myself," he remarked. He praised Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok's collaboration in crafting the series.
Yeon Sang-ho shared insights about his partnership with Choi Gyu-seok, explaining their collaborative creative process: “When something worth connecting comes up, I start writing, then he listens to the script and asks questions.”
Lee Dong-jin shared his thoughts on Season 2's expanded universe, noting the introduction of resurrection as a compelling storyline element. Discussing terms like decrees and executors within the series, Bong Joon-ho highlighted their significant impact despite being simple words in Korean. “When the demonstrations begin, you feel a mix of fear and adrenaline,” he explained.
Season 2 introduces dynamic visuals for executors through enhanced VFX techniques compared to Season 1's approach. Yeon Sang-ho detailed these changes to showcase multiple executors.
The actors' performances received commendation from Bong Joon-ho for bringing intensity to the series' narrative. Choi Gyu-seok expressed appreciation for how lines were delivered onscreen beyond what he envisioned while creating the comics.
Bong Joon-ho concluded by expressing his fondness for Hellbound: “As a fan of director Yeon Sang-ho, I love Hellbound because it exposes the fear and weakness that people feel."
