Netflix and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) have announced the renewal of their licensing deal for animated films, with an expansion to include live-action titles starting in 2027. This agreement will grant Netflix exclusive rights to UFEG's animated films, including those from Illumination and DreamWorks Animation (DWA), and add U.S. rights to live-action films from Universal Pictures and Focus Features.
The new deal stipulates that Netflix will obtain live-action films no later than eight months after their theatrical release. After an initial premiere on Peacock, these films will be exclusively available on Netflix for a 10-month window before returning to Peacock. Additionally, Netflix will license rights to Universal’s complete animation and live-action film slate for further windows in future years.
Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded partnership: “We have always valued our partnership with NBCUniversal, and we are excited to expand it to bring even more entertainment to our U.S. members starting in 2027.” She highlighted the popularity of Illumination and DWA animated films on Netflix and looked forward to adding live-action content from Universal Pictures and Focus Features.
Peter Levinsohn, Chairman of Global Distribution at NBCUniversal Studio Group, commented on the benefits of the partnership: “With this expanded partnership, we’re providing an optimal experience for today’s consumer with a direct-to-consumer strategy that is advantageous to both NBCUniversal and Netflix.”
Illumination's productions account for three of the top five animated films of 2024, while DreamWorks Animation celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The success of previous collaborations between Netflix and UFEG is evident; eight out of ten top animated films on Netflix in early 2024 were from Illumination or DWA.
UFEG continues its tradition of commercial success by partnering with notable production companies such as Blumhouse and Amblin Partners. The studio maintains the largest theatrical slate in the industry.
Netflix remains one of the leading entertainment services globally with over 283 million paid memberships across more than 190 countries. NBCUniversal is a prominent media company known for its diverse portfolio spanning film, television, streaming services like Peacock, and theme parks.
