The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced an investment of nearly $400 million in the Clean Ports Program, targeting the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and SeaStreak LLC. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is set to receive approximately $344 million for its "Catalyzing Change: Zero-Emissions NY-NJ Port Projects for a Greener Future." This project will involve deploying electric cargo handling equipment, drayage trucks, and installing vessel shore power infrastructure. The initiative includes a community engagement plan and worker training programs.
SeaStreak LLC will be allocated about $55 million to introduce high-speed zero-emission ferries between northern New Jersey and New York City. The project also involves setting up shore power electrical equipment with battery energy storage systems. Additionally, a community stakeholder group will be established to enhance training, workforce development, and technology awareness.
These grants are funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, marking a significant step in combating climate change by reducing diesel air pollution at ports while creating well-paying jobs.
