The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that the Ports of Indiana will receive nearly $500,000 through the Clean Ports Program as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda. This funding is aimed at climate and air quality planning to conduct decarbonization studies at two Ohio River ports.

These grants are part of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, which represents a significant investment in combating climate change and promoting clean energy. The funds will support efforts to reduce diesel air pollution from U.S. ports while fostering good-paying union jobs.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Our nation’s ports are critical to creating opportunity here in America, creating good-paying jobs, moving goods, and powering our economy.” He noted that the $3 billion investment aligns with President Biden’s vision for economic growth through environmentally sustainable practices.

Jody Peacock, CEO of Ports of Indiana, expressed gratitude for the EPA's support: “Ports of Indiana is honored to have the Environmental Protection Agency’s endorsement and financial support for decarbonization planning at our Jeffersonville and Mount Vernon ports.” These facilities significantly contribute to southern Indiana and northern Kentucky's economy by generating over $4 billion annually and supporting 20,000 jobs.

The Clean Ports Program aims to improve air quality by installing zero-emission technologies across U.S. ports. This includes deploying battery-electric and hydrogen-powered equipment like cargo handling machines, drayage trucks, locomotives, vessels, as well as supporting infrastructure such as charging stations and solar power systems.

In February 2024, EPA opened funding opportunities under this program to advance clean technologies at ports nationwide. After reviewing numerous applications totaling over $8 billion in requests, 55 projects were selected based on criteria including workforce development initiatives.

The initiative also supports President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative by ensuring disadvantaged communities benefit from cleaner air and new job opportunities linked to zero-emission technologies.

The EPA plans to finalize project plans with selectees over the coming months before awarding funds for implementation within three to four years.
