The United States and Chile held discussions on October 29 and 30 to assess the progress of the United States-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Environment Chapter and activities under the United States-Chile Environmental Cooperation Agreement (ECA).
These meetings comprised government-to-government sessions and a public session involving the FTA Environmental Affairs Council and the ECA Joint Commission for Environmental Cooperation. Key topics included joint efforts to address climate change, combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, tackle wildlife trafficking, and reduce plastic pollution. The discussions also covered bilateral cooperation on enforcing environmental laws, managing natural resources sustainably, promoting environmental education, engaging civil society in decision-making processes related to the environment, and maintaining air and water quality.
During these meetings, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to trade and environmental policy cooperation. This includes implementing agreements such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
The U.S. delegation was led by Jennifer R. Littlejohn from the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs along with Kelly Milton from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative for Environment and Natural Resources.
