The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing over $2.5 million to consumers who were misled by Credit Karma's credit offers. The FTC had taken action against Credit Karma in 2022, accusing the company of falsely claiming that consumers were "pre-approved" and had "90% odds" of approval for credit card offers, which many did not qualify for. Credit Karma agreed to an FTC order to cease these deceptive claims and compensate affected consumers.
The FTC is sending checks and PayPal payments to 50,994 consumers who filed valid claims before the March 4, 2024 deadline. Consumers are advised to cash their checks within 90 days or redeem their PayPal payments within 30 days.
For questions regarding payments, consumers can contact JND Legal Administration at 866-848-0871 or visit the FTC’s website for more information on the refund process. The FTC emphasizes that it never requires payment or account information for refunds.
The Commission provides interactive dashboards with a state-by-state breakdown of refunds in its cases. In 2023 alone, FTC actions resulted in $330 million refunded to consumers nationwide.
The Federal Trade Commission aims to promote competition and protect consumer interests through education and enforcement. It assures that it will never demand money, make threats, request money transfers, or promise prizes. More information on consumer topics can be found at consumer.ftc.gov, while fraud reports can be submitted at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
