Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced funding for two Florida ports under the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda. Nearly $2.1 million will be distributed to Broward County and the Tampa Port Authority through the EPA's Clean Ports Program to enhance climate and air quality planning.
The Tampa Bay Port Authority is set to receive a Climate and Air Quality Planning Grant amounting to approximately $1.8 million for Port Tampa Bay. This funding aims to develop an air emissions inventory and an emissions reduction strategy focusing on feasibility, energy needs, and infrastructure improvements necessary for transitioning to zero-emissions operations over time. The project will also engage with local communities and port workforce stakeholders.
Broward County has been awarded around $300,000 for similar initiatives at Port Everglades. The grant will update a 2015 baseline emissions inventory with new data, analyze emission reductions from 2015 to 2024, and plan strategies among identified sources in the inventory while engaging communities and workforce stakeholders.
These grants are part of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act—the largest investment in clean energy—and aim to reduce diesel pollution from U.S. ports while promoting well-paying jobs that help American ports thrive.
EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan emphasized the importance of ports in creating opportunities and powering the economy: “Delivering cleaner technologies and resources to U.S. ports will slash harmful air and climate pollution while protecting people who work in and live nearby port communities.”
Acting Regional Administrator Jeaneanne Gettle added, “The goal is to build a foundation for the port sector to transition over time to fully zero-emissions operations.”
U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz highlighted Port Everglades’ economic significance: “With this money, not only will Port Everglades be an economic leader but a leader in emission-free technology.” Similarly, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor praised support for Port Tampa Bay’s vision: “This new federal support...will allow the installation of new electric infrastructure.”
Ports play a vital role in moving goods across the country but contribute significantly to diesel pollution affecting nearby communities' health and contributing to climate change. The funds announced today aim at improving air quality by installing clean freight technologies, eliminating over 3 million metric tons of carbon pollution.
Earlier this year, EPA opened funding opportunities for zero-emission technology deployment at U.S. ports through competitions that closed in May 2024 with over $8 billion requested by applicants nationwide.
After thorough review processes, EPA selected 55 applications for investment based on criteria including workforce development efforts aligning with national goals for a zero-emission freight sector.
Selected projects cover various equipment used at ports with funds supporting battery-electric or hydrogen-powered units alongside necessary infrastructure developments like shore power systems or solar power generation facilities.
Initial estimates suggest these measures could reduce CO2 emissions by over 3 million metric tons within ten years while enhancing job growth within both traditional port roles as well as emerging clean energy sectors—supporting broader U.S competitiveness globally regarding sustainable technologies.
