Chairman John Moolenaar and Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and Chinese Communist Party have expressed their support for the recent approval of arms sales aimed at strengthening Taiwan's defense capabilities.
The decision involves a $2 billion sale, which includes three National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and additional air defense radars. According to Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi, these systems are expected to enhance deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region.
In a joint statement, they noted: “We welcome the administration’s decision to approve the sale of defensive systems to Taiwan. The $2 billion sale of three National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and additional air defense radars will increase deterrence in the Indo-Pacific."
They further highlighted that similar systems have been effective in Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression, suggesting that they could similarly bolster Taiwan's defenses against military threats from the Chinese Communist Party. The statement added: "These systems have contributed to Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s brutal and unprovoked aggression and will similarly enhance Taiwan’s defensive capabilities against the Chinese Communist Party’s military threats, demonstrated earlier this month in a massive air-and-sea drill meant to intimidate Taiwan."
The committee members emphasized their legal obligation to ensure Taiwan can defend itself, stressing the need for swift delivery of these arms: "We are bound by law to provide Taiwan with the capabilities to defend itself and must expedite the delivery of the arms Taiwan urgently requires.”
