The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced an extension of the public comment period for its proposed final cleanup plan at the Diamond Alkali Superfund Site, located at 80-120 Lister Ave. in Newark, New Jersey. Initially set to end on November 12, the deadline has now been pushed to November 26, 2024, following requests from the community.
The EPA conducted a public meeting on September 19 to present details of the cleanup plan and respond to questions from residents and stakeholders. The proposal includes maintaining the current remedy while enhancing it with additional measures such as reinstalling and reactivating seven groundwater pumps, upgrading the existing groundwater treatment system, and repairing any damage to the cap that covers contaminated materials. This strategy aims to build upon previous efforts while avoiding short-term risks associated with other methods like excavation and removal of contaminated materials.
Comments regarding the proposed plan can be submitted until November 26, 2024. Interested parties are encouraged to send their feedback to Eugenia Naranjo, Remedial Project Manager at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Comments can be mailed to her office at 290 Broadway – 18th Floor, New York, NY 10007 or sent via email to Naranjo.eugenia@epa.gov.
