U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Area Port of San Luis intercepted a significant cache of high-powered assault weapons. The seizure took place on November 1, when CBP officers encountered a 28-year-old U.S. citizen attempting to exit the United States for Mexico in a Chevrolet SUV.

The vehicle was subjected to further inspection after a CBP canine unit detected weapons. In the secondary inspection area, non-intrusive technology revealed irregularities within a speaker box located behind the rear seat of the SUV. Upon searching, officers discovered five AK-47 rifles, five AK-47 ammunition magazines, two 50-caliber rifles, and two 50-caliber ammunition magazines concealed inside.

"Preventing the smuggling of these weapons into Mexico undoubtedly saved lives," said Chris Leon, Area Port Director for San Luis. "Our CBP officers remain alert and keen to disrupt illegal activity that compromises safety and security within our communities on both sides of the border."

Following the discovery, officers seized both the weapons and the vehicle involved. The driver was handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations for further action.

CBP is recognized as America's frontline defense: it is not only the nation's largest law enforcement organization but also serves as the world's first unified border management agency with over 65,000 personnel committed to protecting America across various terrains while facilitating safe travel and trade.
