The Department of the Interior’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR) has announced that it disbursed $16.45 billion in revenues for fiscal year 2024. These funds were generated from energy production on federal and Tribal onshore lands, as well as federal offshore areas.
This year's disbursement ranks as the fourth largest since 1982, with three of the top four highest years occurring within the past four years. The funds support a range of initiatives for states and Tribes, including public facility construction and maintenance, conservation projects like irrigation and hydropower, historic preservation, and land protection efforts.
The allocation includes $1.18 billion to Tribes and individual Indian mineral owners; $3.09 billion to the Reclamation Fund; $1.01 billion to the Land and Water Conservation Fund; $150 million to the Historic Preservation Fund; $413 million to federal agencies; and $6.32 billion to the U.S. Treasury.
Additionally, ONRR distributed $4.29 billion in fiscal year 2024 funds to 33 states. This revenue was sourced from oil, gas, renewable energy, and mineral production on federal lands within state borders, as well as offshore oil and gas tracts in federal waters adjacent to four Gulf of Mexico states.
New Mexico received the highest disbursement at $2.88 billion, followed by Wyoming with $590.92 million, Louisiana with $163.47 million, North Dakota with $146.66 million, Texas with $100.74 million, Utah with $93.74 million, Colorado with $89.23 million, Mississippi with $52.60 million, Alabama with $52.14 million, California with $46.46 million, and Alaska receiving $30.58 million.
Revenues allocated to 33 federally recognized Tribes and approximately 31,000 individual Indian mineral owners represent full compensation for energy and mineral production activities on Indian lands. These revenues are utilized for infrastructure development, healthcare provision, education enhancement, community programs like senior centers and youth initiatives.
ONRR manages these energy revenues through leases from public resources on both the U.S Outer Continental Shelf and onshore federal lands along with Tribal territories.
Since its inception in 1982, ONRR has disbursed over $387 billion in mineral leasing revenues across various sectors monthly from royalties collected from companies operating on these lands.
