Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken recently engaged in a discussion with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, focusing on the security situations in Haiti and Somalia, as well as detainees held by the Houthis in Yemen. This conversation was confirmed by Spokesperson Matthew Miller.
During the call, Secretary Blinken highlighted the progress made by the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti. He emphasized "the value of heeding the Haitian government’s request to transition the MSS to a UN peacekeeping operation," which aims to provide long-term security support for Haitians.
Additionally, they explored funding options for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). They also discussed measures to ensure the release of all UN, diplomatic, and nongovernmental organization staff detained by the Houthis in Yemen.
The Secretary expressed gratitude towards Secretary-General Guterres for his ongoing leadership and collaboration in tackling these significant issues.
