Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) will receive $48,763,746 through the Clean Ports Program. This funding aims to support zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure at the Port of Savannah and the Port of Brunswick.
The GPA plans to implement vessel shore power systems, allowing ships to connect to electric grid power instead of using diesel engines while docked. Additionally, diesel terminal tractors will be replaced with electric ones, alongside new charging infrastructure. The GPA intends to engage local communities through advisory networks and provide training for workers on these new technologies.
These grants are part of President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, described as "the largest investment in combating climate change and promoting clean energy in history." The initiative seeks to reduce diesel air pollution around U.S. ports while creating well-paying union jobs.
Acting Regional Administrator Jeaneanne Gettle stated: “Our goal is to build a foundation for the port sector to transition over time to fully zero-emissions operations.” She emphasized that ports could serve as catalysts for significant changes across the freight sector.
Senator Jon Ossoff expressed his commitment by saying: “Senator Warnock and I continue working to upgrade Georgia’s port infrastructure... This is a win-win for our economy and for local communities.”
Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock highlighted Georgia's strategic position in clean energy advancements: “As we continue moving toward a clean energy economy, it is critical Georgia and its workers remain on the frontlines of these federal investments.”
The funds are expected to enhance air quality at ports nationwide by implementing zero-emission technologies, reducing carbon emissions equivalent to those from 391,220 homes' annual energy use.
Earlier this year, EPA opened two funding opportunities targeting zero-emission technology deployment and climate planning at U.S. ports. Following a competitive application process with over $8 billion requested nationwide, 55 projects were selected based on criteria including workforce development efforts.
Selected projects span various human-operated equipment used at ports with funds allocated for battery-electric and hydrogen-powered units among others. Initial estimates suggest significant reductions in CO2 emissions over ten years due solely from newly proposed equipment installations.
Beyond environmental benefits, this program aims at job creation within domestic clean energy sectors enhancing economic competitiveness via innovative zero-emissions solutions positioning America globally as leaders in such technologies.
The Clean Ports Program aligns with President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative aiming "to deliver 40% of overall benefits" from federal investments towards disadvantaged communities often burdened by pollution ensuring cleaner air quality along high-quality job opportunities therein associated operations involving advanced emission-free systems installed throughout major maritime hubs like those
