The Department of Defense (DoD) has announced its strategy for deploying private fifth-generation (5G) networks at military installations. Signed on October 16, 2024, this initiative is part of the DoD's broader modernization efforts to utilize both commercial and private 5G networks for enhanced mobile connectivity. The Fulcrum: The Department of Defense Information Technology Advancement Strategy, released in June 2024, also supports the implementation of 5G across DoD facilities and operations.
The new strategy outlines how private 5G networks will be implemented and operated at military sites while promoting Open RAN ecosystems where feasible. This infrastructure aims to improve quality of life and support routine mission needs for both military personnel and civilians at these locations. It will also enable the transfer of large data volumes, crucial for maintaining a competitive edge in information and decision-making.
While most military installations are expected to use commercial networks, the DoD acknowledges that these may not always meet specific requirements. In such cases, private networks could supplement or replace commercial services by addressing unique mission needs, security concerns, and specialized capabilities.
The strategy sets several goals. Firstly, it seeks to align private 5G infrastructure with each installation's mission by assessing whether certain requirements necessitate a private network. Secondly, it aims to speed up the acquisition and secure deployment of 5G technology by providing additional guidance for integrating new commercial capabilities into DoD missions. Lastly, it encourages expanding an Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) ecosystem.
In the upcoming months, further guidance and reference materials will be provided to assist Military Departments in deploying both commercial and private 5G networks on their premises. The full DoD Private 5G Deployment Strategy is available online.
