U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves has paid tribute to the late Norman Y. Mineta by naming the Commerce Department’s auditorium in his honor. This ceremony took place on what would have been Mineta's birthday, celebrating his contributions to civil rights, diversity, and public service.

Mineta was the first Asian American to serve in a U.S. cabinet position, holding roles at both the Commerce Department and Department of Transportation. His work included efforts to expand economic opportunities for all Americans.

“Through his life of service, especially here at the Commerce Department, Secretary Mineta became a trailblazer for expanding economic opportunity for all Americans,” stated Deputy Secretary Graves during the event. “He will always be an inspiration to those of us who work at the Department of Commerce, as he is for people all over this country.”

Throughout his career in public service, Mineta worked with both political parties to create policies that impacted infrastructure, transportation, commerce, and technology positively. As Commerce Secretary, he focused on safeguarding Census Bureau data integrity and improving patent processes.

Mineta's commitment to civil rights was influenced by his time in Japanese internment camps during World War II. He played a key role in passing the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 while serving in Congress.

The Commerce Department acknowledges America's diversity as its strength and continues its efforts towards an inclusive economy that benefits Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
