The Department of Defense has released its Calendar Year 2023 Annual Report on Suicide in the Military, highlighting an increase in suicides among service members compared to the previous year. However, there was a noted decrease in suicides among military family members. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, stating that "one loss to suicide is one too many."

Austin reaffirmed his commitment to improving the health and well-being of military personnel and their families. He stressed that maintaining readiness involves taking care of those who serve. The report's findings underscore the need for continued efforts in suicide prevention and postvention.

In response to these challenges, Austin directed a new suicide prevention campaign plan in 2023. This plan includes five lines of effort and incorporates 83 key actions from recommendations by the Suicide Prevention Response and Independent Review Committee (SPRIRC). By 2024, 20 of these recommendations had been implemented.

Looking ahead, the Department plans significant investments in suicide prevention during Fiscal Year 2025 with Congressional support. Austin highlighted that principled leadership and focused resource investment can reduce harmful behaviors.

Efforts are ongoing to improve mental health care delivery, enhance suicide prevention training, and educate about lethal means safety. The Department aims to foster supportive team cultures while addressing stigma related to seeking help.

"The Department mourns our teammates whom we've lost to suicide," Austin said. "And through our actions — by taking care of our people, and prioritizing the health, well-being, and morale of our Force — we honor their memories."

For those struggling or needing support, assistance is available through the suicide and crisis lifeline at 9-8-8.
