Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly met at the Lima Convention Center in Peru on November 14, 2024. The meeting took place during the APEC summit, providing an opportunity for both leaders to discuss various pressing issues.
Secretary Blinken expressed his appreciation for the chance to meet with Foreign Minister Joly and other Canadian colleagues, emphasizing the importance of their discussions. "One of the great benefits of get-togethers like APEC is the opportunity to spend time with my great colleague and good friend, Melanie Joly," he stated.
The agenda included a range of topics, notably Haiti's security situation. Both countries are collaborating on supporting Haiti's transition through a Multilateral Security Support mission. Secretary Blinken highlighted their joint efforts: "We're working together to do everything we can to support security for Haiti."
As NATO allies, they addressed challenges facing the alliance, including Russian aggression in Ukraine and North Korean involvement in the conflict. Blinken remarked on these concerns: "The ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and now the introduction of North Korean forces into that conflict zone."
Additionally, discussions covered efforts to advance peace and stability in the Middle East. Foreign Minister Joly reiterated Canada's commitment to its relationship with the United States and touched upon shared goals such as finalizing the Columbia River Treaty.
Minister Joly also emphasized geopolitical issues: "We will be talking about geopolitical issues that you mentioned – definitely support to Ukrainians fighting for their freedom but also for ours." She voiced concern over North Korea's involvement in Ukraine, calling it an escalation.
Both leaders agreed on continuing their cooperation across these areas and expressed gratitude for their collaboration.
