CDT CEO Alexandra Reeve Givens addressed attendees at the 2024 Tech Prom, highlighting the importance of unity in navigating changes within Washington's tech policy landscape. The event brought together a diverse group of advocates, companies, researchers, and government leaders.
Givens emphasized CDT's commitment to fostering collaboration: "CDT has always focused on bringing people together to advance a future that works for everyone." She noted the impact of their efforts over the past year in shaping technology's role in daily life.
One focus has been ensuring responsible innovation in artificial intelligence (AI), promoting transparency and accountability. Givens stated, "Together, we’re working to ensure that artificial intelligence is developed and used in a way that advances responsible innovation."
CDT has also advocated for those most affected by new technologies to have representation in governance discussions. This includes workers concerned with fair tech use in workplaces and consumers facing AI-generated scams.
The organization is actively engaged with policymakers on consumer privacy, online trust, safety, and free expression. As new technologies increase governmental access to personal information, CDT fights for legal safeguards protecting fundamental freedoms.
In an election year worldwide, CDT offered nonpartisan technical support to election officials and tech companies to promote secure elections. Givens affirmed their ongoing mission: "Every day, we’re fighting to make sure technology works for people – for me, for you, and for ordinary people everywhere."
The organization is expanding its influence globally. In Brussels, CDT plays a role in implementing the Digital Services Act and AI Act. In the U.S., they advise on issues like privacy and kids' safety across states.
As a new administration approaches amid uncertainty about future paths, Givens reassured that CDT's values remain steadfast: "We believe that technology should be a force for making people’s lives better."
Acknowledging the evening's fundraising efforts at Tech Prom aimed at reaching a million-dollar goal—just $7,000 short—Givens encouraged donations: "If you’re moved to help support us at this crucial time — please consider a donation through the cards on the tables."
