U.S. and Vietnam discuss energy security cooperation in Washington

As the United States and Vietnam prepare to mark 30 years of normalized relations in 2025, a significant meeting took place on November 15, 2024, in Washington, DC. The fifth annual U.S.-Vietnam Energy Security Dialogue was led by Laura Lochman, Acting Assistant Secretary from the State Department’s Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR), and Nguyen Hoang Long, Vice Minister from Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade. The U.S. delegation also included Michael Schiffer, USAID’s Assistant Administrator for Asia.

The dialogue focused on key areas for ongoing bilateral energy cooperation. Discussions covered power market development, energy conservation and efficiency, transmission systems, power storage solutions, rare earth elements, critical mineral supply chains, and steps towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. This meeting highlighted the active U.S.-Vietnam technology-focused energy partnership and emphasized a mutual commitment to economic growth and innovation as fundamental aspects of their relationship.
