U.S. official's attendance at CUSEF forum criticized by Chairman Moolenaar

Chairman John Moolenaar of Michigan expressed concerns over U.S. officials attending a forum in Hong Kong organized by the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF). The foundation is linked to the Chinese Communist Party and was established by former Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, known for his attempts to implement strict national security laws.

Moolenaar stated, "The CUSEF forum is not an open and honest exchange of ideas. Instead, it is an event that seeks to legitimize the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) ongoing crackdown in Hong Kong." He highlighted that this year's forum coincides with trials of pro-democracy advocates like Jimmy Lai, emphasizing disappointment in American participation at such events.

He urged U.S. officials to reconsider their involvement in future forums, hoping they would "send a clear message that the deterioration of Hong Kong’s autonomy, rights, and freedom cannot be overlooked."
