The House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party will continue its work in the upcoming Congress, according to Chairman John Moolenaar. The committee, formed two years ago by the Republican majority, aims to address threats posed by China and has received bipartisan support.
Rep. John Moolenaar expressed optimism about the panel's future, citing support from President-elect Donald Trump's national security team appointments. "I’m very optimistic that we’ll continue to make progress," said Moolenaar. He emphasized the committee's bipartisan nature as a sign of cooperation against a common adversary.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has indicated that the select committee will persist in its efforts. Moolenaar noted interest from several lawmakers wishing to join the panel, which currently includes 13 Republicans and 11 Democrats.
Established in December 2022, the committee focuses on preventing China from acquiring advanced American technology and hindering Beijing's military buildup. It has conducted numerous hearings and investigations while communicating with administration officials on critical issues.
The committee's work so far has addressed biosecurity, research security, TikTok bans, environmental concerns, and technology loss prevention. Additionally, it tackles China's global influence activities, infrastructure dangers, cyberspace threats, economic aggression, Hong Kong suppression, and Uyghur minority treatment.
Recently, Moolenaar introduced legislation to revoke China's permanent normal trade relations status due to its state-run economy. "So the committee’s work is far from done," he stated. He sees opportunities for legislative action both in the coming weeks and during the next Congress.
