The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is set to host a national Native Homeownership and Asset Building Summit during Native American Heritage Month. The event, organized by HUD’s Office of Native American Programs, will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on November 20-21, 2024. It will feature breakout sessions, a trade show, and community activities. Daily plenary sessions will include remarks from local and Tribal leaders as well as talks by partners in housing and community development.
HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman highlighted the significance of this month-long celebration: “Every November, we reflect on the rich cultural, historical, and social contributions of Native Americans. At HUD, we are committed to promoting fair housing and community development while respecting Tribal sovereignty and acknowledging the strong history of Native peoples."
The department supports President Biden’s proclamation recognizing the importance of uplifting Tribal Nations during National Native American Heritage Month. Efforts are aligned with Executive Order 14112 aimed at reforming federal funding for Tribal Nations. Initiatives include funding set-asides for neighborhood revitalization planning costs, permanent supportive housing construction, and preservation of manufactured housing communities.
HUD continues to demonstrate its commitment through various projects such as administering Indian Housing Block Grant funding and launching its first Tribal Intergovernmental Advisory Committee. These efforts are part of HUD's ongoing dedication to fulfilling the Federal Government’s trust responsibility toward nearly 600 Tribes across the Nation.
