The Biden-Harris Administration has announced a significant development in semiconductor manufacturing, with the U.S. Department of Commerce awarding GlobalFoundries (GF) up to $1.5 billion through the CHIPS Incentives Program. This funding aims to support GF's investment of approximately $13 billion over the next decade in its facilities located in New York and Vermont. The focus is on producing semiconductors essential for automotive, smart mobile, aerospace and defense, and communications technologies.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stated, "By investing in GF’s domestic manufacturing capabilities, we are helping to secure a stable domestic supply of chips that are found in everything from home electronics to advanced weapons systems." She emphasized the strategic strengthening of the semiconductor supply chain as part of national security objectives.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Natalie Quillian noted the challenges faced during the pandemic due to semiconductor shortages and highlighted President Biden's efforts through the CHIPS and Science Act to revitalize American manufacturing. "Today's award is a testament to how the Biden-Harris Administration continues to drive an American manufacturing renaissance," Quillian said.

GlobalFoundries is one of four companies outside China providing mature foundry capabilities at scale and is headquartered in the United States. The investment will include building a new facility in New York and modernizing existing operations there and in Vermont. It is expected to create around 10,000 jobs across construction and manufacturing sectors.

Dr. Thomas Caulfield, president and CEO of GF, expressed appreciation for government support: "GF's essential chips are at the core of U.S. economic, supply chain and national security."

The CHIPS for America program has so far awarded over $10 billion out of more than $36 billion proposed incentives funding across 20 states, aiming to create over 125,000 jobs as part of broader economic plans by President Biden and Vice President Harris.
