The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing over $140,000 to consumers who were misled by false "Made in USA" claims from Chaucer Accessories and Bates Accessories, along with Bates Retail Group. These companies are based in New England.
In 2023, the FTC took action against these companies and their owner, Thomas Bates. The FTC alleged that they falsely advertised products as “Made in USA” or “Hand Crafted in USA.” According to the complaint, many of these items, including belts, bags, wallets, and shoes, were either fully imported or contained significant imported components.
The FTC is sending checks and PayPal payments to 4,061 affected consumers. Consumers should cash their checks within 90 days or redeem their PayPal payments within 30 days.
Consumers with questions about their payment can contact the administrator Epiq Systems at 877-817-1384 or visit the FTC’s website for frequently asked questions about the refund process. The Commission emphasizes that it never requires individuals to pay money or provide account information to receive a refund.
The Commission’s interactive dashboards offer a state-by-state breakdown of refunds related to FTC cases. In 2023 alone, FTC actions resulted in $330 million in refunds to consumers nationwide.
The Federal Trade Commission aims to promote competition while protecting and educating consumers. The FTC will not demand money, make threats, instruct you to transfer money, or promise prizes.
