Former DEA Special Operations Director: ‘Cartels need to be treated like the narco-terrorist organizations they are’

Derek Maltz Sr., a former agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), has called for Mexican drug cartels to be held accountable for what he describes as "massive amounts" of American deaths. He suggests that these organizations should be treated as "Narco-Terrorist organizations." Maltz made this statement in a post on X dated November 19.

"Law enforcement has done an outstanding job hitting the cartel's on a regular basis, but we need to step up the game and hold the cartels ACCOUNTABLE for the massive amounts of deaths to our citizens," said Maltz Sr., Former Director of the DEA's Special Operations Division. "The production of poison in Mexico is off the charts and we need to hit their clandestine labs very hard. The cartels need to be treated like the NARCO-TERRORIST organizations they are. No more operating with impunity as the America First Train is gearing up to save our future generation."

According to Maltz, the cartels have been responsible for more American deaths than any terrorist organization in U.S. history. He advocates for classifying them as terrorist organizations as a strategy to curb their influence and operations.

Former Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Tom Homan, who was appointed as President-elect Donald Trump’s "border czar," also supports the designation of Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations. According to News Nation, Homan compares the cartels to a Fortune 500 company and emphasizes the need for reform to address escalating border issues.

The Tactical Mountain Institute reports that there has been an increased call in recent years to classify these cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations due to rising fentanyl-related deaths and violence at the border. Such classification would enable the government to impose stricter sanctions and conduct more robust military operations against these groups.

Maltz is currently employed by PenLink Ltd. as Executive Director of Government Relations, according to information from Border911's website. He is also part of Border911, a non-profit organization comprising border security experts dedicated to educating Americans about the border crisis. Previously, Maltz served as director of the DEA’s Special Operations Division during his 28-year tenure with the agency. He continues to share his expertise on news broadcasts, podcasts, and before Congress regarding border issues.
