FTC distributes refunds over fake rental ads scam

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is distributing nearly $1.9 million to consumers affected by misleading rental ads and false promises of "free" credit reports from Credit Bureau Center LLC. The FTC's 2017 lawsuit alleged that the company, previously known as MyScore LLC, pretended to be property owners and offered tours for unauthorized rental properties. Consumers were required to obtain credit reports and scores from their websites, which claimed to be free but actually enrolled them in a monthly credit monitoring service costing $29.94. Many consumers only became aware of this enrollment after unexpected charges appeared on their statements.

Samuel Levine, Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, stated: “This case demonstrates that the FTC is persistent and tireless in its work to return money to defrauded consumers.” He emphasized the need for Congress to restore the FTC’s authority to secure monetary relief effectively when companies violate laws.

In June 2018, a federal judge ordered Credit Bureau Center to pay for violating Section 13(b) of the FTC Act. However, this decision was overturned in April 2021 following a Supreme Court ruling limiting the Commission's ability under Section 13(b). Later in September 2021, it was determined that Credit Bureau Center also breached Section 19 of the FTC Act, leading to a reimposed award. The defendants lost on appeal, concluding the lawsuit in June 2024.

Checks are being sent out to 42,849 impacted consumers who should cash them within 90 days as indicated. Questions regarding refunds can be directed to Simpluris at 1-844-804-5464 or through visiting the FTC website for more information about the refund process.

The FTC's interactive dashboards offer detailed refund data by state. In 2023 alone, FTC actions resulted in $330 million returned to consumers nationwide.

The Federal Trade Commission continues its mission of promoting competition while protecting and educating consumers without demanding money or promising prizes falsely. More information about consumer issues can be found at consumer.ftc.gov or fraud can be reported at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
