On November 25, 2024, the United States marked the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken issued a statement reaffirming the U.S. commitment to addressing gender-based violence and urging global cooperation in these efforts.
The U.S. has been actively implementing policies and investments that are making tangible impacts. The Safe from the Start ReVisioned initiative is one such effort, focusing on enhancing prevention, risk mitigation, response efforts, and expertise related to gender-based violence from the onset of emergencies. In Fiscal Year 2024, over $273 million was allocated by the U.S. government for initiatives aimed at preventing and responding to gender-based violence in emergency situations.
Blinken emphasized that this work is crucial not only for survivors but also for individuals facing gender-based violence worldwide. He highlighted that these efforts contribute to creating a peaceful and prosperous global community. The United States plans to continue its collaboration with partner governments, civil society organizations, and survivors to achieve significant progress in this area.
