U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas have intercepted over $880,000 worth of cocaine hidden in a tractor-trailer carrying broccoli. This seizure was carried out by the Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers.
Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, from the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, stated, "Our frontline CBP officers continue to exercise resolute vigilance, utilize their training, experience, technology and the end result is this significant seizure of cocaine."
The incident occurred on November 22 when CBP officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility stopped a tractor-trailer entering from Mexico for inspection. The inspection involved non-intrusive inspection equipment and led to the discovery of 28 packages containing approximately 65.96 pounds (29.92 kg) of cocaine concealed within the vehicle. The estimated street value of this seizure is $880,725.
In response to this find, CBP OFO seized both the narcotics and the tractor-trailer. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents have commenced a criminal investigation into the matter.
