Ryan J. Scudder Executive Assistant Commissioner | U.S. Customs and Border Protection
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been recognized as one of Military.com's Top 25 Employers for Veterans for 2025, making it the only federal agency to receive this honor. Troy A. Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner, expressed pride in the fact that a significant portion of CBP's workforce consists of veterans. "More than a third of our CBP workforce are veterans, and providing support to them and their families are one of our top priorities," he stated.
Military.com’s Veteran Employment Project selects employers based on factors such as dedicated veteran hiring teams, internship opportunities for transitioning veterans, and clear communication on their websites. Over the past year, CBP has intensified efforts to recruit veterans by attending military conferences, advertising in military publications, and hosting webinars to explain job opportunities within the agency.
CBP also participates in programs like the Department of Defense SkillBridge and Veteran Affairs Non-Paid Work Experience to provide job training for transitioning service members. The agency's Veteran Support Program (VSP), established in 2019, offers resources related to employment benefits and health support for veteran employees.
In Fiscal Year 2024 alone, VSP contacted 1,900 out of over 17,000 veteran employees at CBP. They helped many access compensation and healthcare services valued at approximately $18 million. In partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), CBP held several events across different states to expedite disability claims services for its veteran employees.
During these events, VA representatives screened attendees for PACT Act eligibility and processed claims more quickly than usual. "Partnering with the VA to expedite access to PACT Act benefits for CBP veteran employees is just one of the ways we are showing our unwavering commitment," said Miller.
Operating nationwide and internationally at various ports of entry, CBP continues its mission to protect American borders while offering diverse career opportunities in law enforcement and other fields.
