U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced that Japan is now an official Global Entry partner country, a development aimed at enhancing travel and security cooperation between the United States and Japan.

“This agreement reflects our shared commitment to facilitating secure and efficient travel while enhancing border security and supporting airport modernization efforts for both nations,” stated Troy A. Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner. He added that by providing Global Entry access to Japanese citizens, the initiative aims to promote safe, secure travel while fostering stronger diplomatic and economic relations.

The partnership allows pre-vetted, low-risk Japanese citizens to expedite customs and immigration processing upon arrival in the United States. These applicants will undergo rigorous background checks similar to those required for U.S. applicants, including an in-person interview before initial enrollment, along with vetting by Japanese authorities. Maintaining low-risk traveler status is essential; violations of program terms will lead to enforcement actions and termination of membership privileges.

Rahm Emanuel, U.S. ambassador to Japan, commented on the significance of this partnership: “Expedited and easy entry into the United States for Japanese visitors means improved travel experiences and better business for both our nations.” He noted that since Japan is a major foreign direct investor in the U.S., with Japanese companies employing nearly a million Americans, establishing Japan as the 18th Global Entry partner country benefits both economies.

Global Entry is part of CBP’s Trusted Traveler Programs, which offers expedited entry services annually to millions of travelers. Eligible members also gain access to TSA PreCheck® for quicker security screening at participating U.S. airports.

Other countries partnered with Global Entry include Argentina, Bahrain, Brazil, Colombia, Croatia, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Panama, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Switzerland,Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom.

Approved members can use the Global Entry Mobile App to confirm their eligibility digitally upon arrival in the U.S., streamlining entry processes further.

CBP describes itself as America's frontline law enforcement organization tasked with ensuring safe travel and trade while protecting national security through innovation, intelligence, and collaboration.
