The ceasefire announced by President Biden is seen as a positive development for both Israel and Lebanon, as well as for regional security. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III stated, "Today is a historic moment." This diplomatic agreement aims to allow tens of thousands of civilians in Lebanon and Israel to return safely to their homes on both sides of the border, ending the violence and destruction associated with this conflict.

Secretary Austin emphasized that U.S. support for Israel's security remains strong, including its right to defend itself against Iranian-backed terrorist organizations such as Lebanese Hizballah and Hamas. The Department of Defense will work closely with international and interagency partners to assist in implementing the ceasefire.

Austin expressed hope that reducing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border could lead to renewed efforts toward resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He stressed the importance of improving humanitarian conditions in Gaza and reiterated the commitment to securing the release of all hostages there, including U.S. citizens.
