The United States has announced new measures targeting individuals aligned with Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. These actions are intended to hold Maduro and his representatives accountable for their role in undermining the electoral process and repressing the Venezuelan people. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken stated, "Four months after the Venezuelan people elected Edmundo González Urrutia as president on July 28, Maduro and his representatives continue to falsely claim victory and violate democratic principles."
The Department of the Treasury is imposing sanctions on 21 individuals associated with Maduro, including members of the security forces and cabinet-level officials. Simultaneously, the Department of State is implementing new visa restrictions under Presidential Proclamation 9931 against those who undermined a competitive electoral process or were responsible for acts of repression.
To date, the Treasury has sanctioned 180 current or former Venezuelan officials for actions against democratic opposition, while nearly 2,000 individuals face visa restrictions from the State Department due to their involvement in undermining democracy or participating in acts of repression in Venezuela. The United States remains committed to working with international partners to defend democratic freedoms in Venezuela.
The visa restrictions follow Presidential Proclamation 9931, while Treasury's sanctions are based on Executive Order 13692, which blocks property and suspends entry of certain persons contributing to the situation in Venezuela. Executive Order 13857 expanded this definition to include those acting directly or indirectly for the Government of Venezuela.
