The decision by Georgian Dream to halt Georgia's process of joining the European Union contradicts the commitment made to the Georgian people, as outlined in their constitution, to pursue full integration into both the EU and NATO. By pausing this accession process, Georgian Dream has declined an opportunity for closer relations with Europe and potentially increased Georgia's vulnerability to influence from the Kremlin.
There is strong support among Georgians for integration with Europe. The United States has condemned the excessive use of force by police against citizens exercising their rights to assembly and expression, including peaceful protests. The U.S. urges all parties involved to ensure that protests remain peaceful.
Georgian Dream's actions, described as anti-democratic, have breached fundamental aspects of the U.S.-Georgia Strategic Partnership. This partnership was founded on shared values such as democracy, rule of law, civil society, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and efforts against corruption. Consequently, the United States has suspended this mechanism.
The U.S. continues to urge the Georgian government to realign with its Euro-Atlantic aspirations, conduct transparent investigations into parliamentary election irregularities, and repeal laws deemed anti-democratic that restrict freedoms of assembly and expression.
