The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 is set to hold a public meeting at Verona High School on December 5, 2024. The event will consist of a Public Availability Session and a Community Meeting aimed at updating residents on local environmental issues.
“EPA is committed to keeping the city of Verona updated on public health and environmental matters within their community,” stated EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister. “As part of this commitment, EPA and our partner agencies will be available to share information and answer community questions in Verona on Dec. 5.”
During the session, representatives from the EPA, Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR), and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) will engage in one-on-one discussions with attendees. The focus will be on ongoing air monitoring efforts by the EPA, particularly concerning the BCP Ingredients Inc. facility in Verona. Additionally, an EPA Superfund Division representative will address inquiries about the Syntex Facility Superfund Site.
The schedule for December 5 includes a Public Availability Session starting at 6 p.m., followed by a presentation on ethylene oxide monitoring near the BCP Ingredients facility at 6:45 p.m. An open Question-and-Answer Session will follow until 8:15 p.m.
This upcoming meeting continues from a previous session held in July 2023, where updates were given on air monitoring studies around the BCP facility. Since 2019, such meetings have been organized to inform Verona residents about health risks related to ethylene oxide emissions and groundwater investigations at the Syntex Facility Superfund Site.
