Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, highlighting the strong relationship between Malta and the United States. Prime Minister Abela expressed gratitude for Secretary Blinken's visit, noting it as a reflection of the enduring ties rooted in shared values and mutual respect.
Prime Minister Abela acknowledged the enhanced cooperation under President Biden's administration, emphasizing commitments to peace, security, democracy, rule of law, and human rights. He noted Malta's role on the United Nations Security Council and its position as chairperson-in-office of the OSCE. "The United States’ unwavering backing of Malta’s role as chairperson-in-office of the OSCE has been invaluable," he stated.
Abela highlighted people-to-people connections and business collaborations between the two nations. With a significant Maltese diaspora in the U.S., particularly in New York, Michigan, San Francisco, and Florida, these ties are strengthened by shared heritage. The Prime Minister expressed eagerness to expand economic ties in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, AI, film, ICT and digital communication, health, education, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in Malta was approximately $2.34 billion in 2021 and has since increased. Key investments include entities like Crane Currency and Cardinal Health. Tourism also presents significant opportunities for both countries.
Secretary Blinken thanked Prime Minister Abela for his hospitality and praised Malta's leadership with the OSCE during challenging times. "It’s been extraordinary what Malta has done with the OSCE," said Blinken. He also commended Malta's dual roles on international platforms like the UN Security Council.
Blinken emphasized that increased foreign direct investment is a measure of trust and confidence between nations. He expressed gratitude for Malta's leadership and partnership: "Thank you again for the leadership that you’ve shown."
Both leaders looked forward to continuing their collaboration to address global challenges.
