The United States has extended its congratulations to President-elect John Mahama following his successful election campaign in Ghana. The announcement came after the Electoral Commission of Ghana declared the results. The U.S. also congratulated Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who will be the first female vice president of Ghana.
In a statement, the U.S. praised the efforts of Ghana's Electoral Commission, poll workers, civil society, and security forces for ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process. "We also applaud Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious acceptance of the results," the statement read.
Despite isolated incidents of violence and reports confirming at least four deaths, the U.S. expressed condolences to the families affected and called for a thorough investigation into these incidents.
The United States emphasized its longstanding partnership with Ghana and expressed eagerness to work closely with President-elect Mahama to strengthen their historic relationship in future endeavors.
