Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources Geoffrey R. Pyatt is set to lead a delegation to Tokyo, Japan from December 11-13 for the third annual U.S.–Japan Energy Security Dialogue. The discussions will focus on energy security, investment opportunities in the clean energy sector, and regional energy cooperation.
The U.S. delegation includes experts from the Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources, the Bureau of International Security Nonproliferation, the Department of Energy, and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. They will meet with their Japanese counterparts led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director General Satoshi Katahira and Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry Director General Shinichi Kihara. A significant private sector component will also be part of this dialogue.
Key areas of discussion include U.S.–Japan energy policy and diplomacy cooperation such as economic partnership under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Japan’s Green Transformation (GX) law. The dialogue will address critical mineral supply chains through the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP), U.S. LNG exports, and efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s energy sector against Russian attacks.
Other topics include securing global energy flows, scaling up decarbonization technologies, deploying clean energy resources like civil nuclear power, renewables, hydrogen, activities under the Japan–U.S. Mekong Power Partnership (JUMPP), Clean Energy Demand Initiative (CEDI), and other regional work to enhance energy security and transformation.
