A Florida resident, George Gonzalez, has been taken into custody for his alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021 breach of the U.S. Capitol. Gonzalez, aged 46 and from Brandon, Florida, faces multiple charges including felony offenses such as assaulting officers and destruction of government property.

The arrest took place on December 9, 2024, in Tampa. The criminal complaint was filed in the District of Columbia and details several charges against Gonzalez. These include assaulting law enforcement during a civil disorder and obstruction of law enforcement.

Gonzalez also faces six misdemeanor charges related to entering restricted areas and engaging in disruptive conduct within the Capitol building. According to court documents supported by video evidence and CCTV footage from the Capitol building, Gonzalez allegedly broke a window to enter the premises and confronted police officers inside.

At around 2:10 p.m., he is accused of shattering a windowpane near the Senate Wing Door before entering through it. Damage to this window was assessed at over $1,000 by officials.

Once inside, Gonzalez reportedly joined other rioters in confronting U.S. Capitol Police officers at various locations within the building. He allegedly charged at a police line twice before being pushed back but ultimately helped overwhelm officers as they advanced further into the building.

Gonzalez spent approximately 42 minutes inside before exiting with others under police escort at about 2:55 p.m.

The prosecution is being handled by both the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section with assistance from counterparts in Florida.

The FBI's Tampa and Washington Field Offices are leading investigations into this case alongside support from local police departments.

Since January 6th events unfolded nearly four years ago, more than 1,572 individuals have faced charges across almost all states for their roles that day; among them over 590 were charged with felonies involving assaults or impediments against law enforcement personnel—a figure reflecting ongoing investigative efforts nationwide.
