After attempting to evade authorities, two individuals suspected of drug smuggling were apprehended, and narcotics were confiscated in Alpine, California. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon when a sedan approached the Border Patrol Immigration Checkpoint on Interstate 8 near Pine Valley. Upon being directed to a secondary inspection, the driver accelerated away from the checkpoint, heading west on Interstate 8.

A brief pursuit ensued, ending when the vehicle lost control and crashed near East Willows Road on I-8. The driver and passenger fled the scene but were soon arrested by Border Patrol agents. During their treatment for crash-related injuries, agents discovered eight plastic-wrapped bundles inside the vehicle. These packages tested positive for fentanyl at the checkpoint, with a total weight of 4.73 pounds.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has taken over the case while the U.S. Border Patrol seized the vehicle involved. Both suspects are facing federal prosecution.

San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel commented on the incident: “Just another example of how dangerous it is to run from law enforcement. Not only did these suspected drug smugglers put their own welfare at risk, but also endangered other motorists on the roadway.” She added that agents work tirelessly to protect public safety and prevent dangerous narcotics from reaching communities.

The U.S. Border Patrol continues its efforts to prevent illegal smuggling activities along national borders and encourages reporting suspicious activities via 911 or directly through San Diego Sector contacts.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), recognized as America's frontline agency, plays a crucial role in safeguarding national security by facilitating lawful travel and trade while protecting economic interests.
