U.S. Representative Pat Fallon (R-TX) said that President-elect Trump plans to reinstate policies aimed at securing the border, asserting that over the past four years, the border has been "trampled by cartels and criminals." Fallon made this statement in a December 2 post on X.

"Over the last four years, the Biden administration remained idle and let our borders get trampled by cartels and criminals," said U.S. Rep. Pat Fallon, Congressman from Texas District 04. "Already, Trump is projecting to reimpose policy that will secure ALL our borders and signal to other countries that the US is back on offense."

According to AP News, Trump announced his intention to implement new tariffs, proposing a 25% tax on all goods entering the U.S. from Mexico and Canada. Trump indicated that this would be among his first executive orders as part of efforts to curb illegal drugs and immigration.

The Hill reports that Trump expressed openness to bipartisan cooperation regarding the citizenship status of "Dreamers," emphasizing that any legislative solution would require Democratic support for enhanced border security and deportation measures. Tom Homan, Trump's appointed "border czar," stressed that such an agreement must include funding for the border wall. While Trump reiterated plans for strict immigration enforcement, including deportations and potentially ending birthright citizenship, he suggested a willingness to negotiate on the Dreamers' issue.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) statistics reveal that U.S. Border Patrol has arrested 14,000 individuals with existing criminal convictions illegally crossing into the country so far in FY24.

In February 2023, 20 state Attorneys General signed a letter addressed to President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken urging them to designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations (FTO). The letter cited 100,000 overdose deaths from drugs in the U.S. in 2022 and described the Sinaloa and CJNG cartels as entities involved in drug and human trafficking who have expanded their activities into terrorism, allegedly collaborating with Hezbollah and China. The letter argued that an FTO designation is essential for combating the escalating violence perpetrated by these cartels.
