Open source AI is making strides in healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship through the use of models like Llama. Developers worldwide are leveraging open source technology to address global challenges.

A series of events this year aimed at building an open source community supported developers with mentorship and funding. These initiatives have led to innovative projects across various fields, highlighting the advantages of open source AI, such as collaboration and flexibility.

In healthcare, City of Hope National Medical Center uses LLMs to create tools for cancer doctors, including a system that matches patients with clinical trials. Kingson Man, Principal Data Scientist at City of Hope, stated: "Medicine is one of the best, most urgent applications for LLMs, given the scale and sensitivity of the text data generated in the clinic."

OtonoCo developed Gene Outlook using open source LLMs to accelerate genomic discoveries. Jong Hang Siong, Founder and Chairman of OtonoCo, said: "With open source, we don’t have to worry about creating a new AI algorithm. We can just focus on the problem and work backwards to see what open source technology is suitable to solve that problem."

In education, DLYog Lab created an app for Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) inspired by co-founders Tarun Chawdhury and Mousumi Chawdhury's personal experiences. Tarun Chawdhury commented: "Llama helps small players like us realize our dream for social good."

Pratham Education Foundation used Llama for a solution aiding young mothers in India with childcare information. Nishant Baghel from PEF remarked: "Social good must be open source."

Entrepreneurship has also benefited from open source AI. HiiiWAV teaches artists how to use AI in startups. Bosko Kante from HiiiWAV noted: "Off-the-shelf closed-source options get pricey with usage... Open source is definitely the way to go."

AIIRA uses AI tools for agriculture enhancement worldwide. Chinmay Hegde from AIIRA expressed hope for continued innovation in this space: "Open source AI’s ability to deploy at scale is transformative."
