In a recent op-ed published in Fox News, Representative John Moolenaar and Senator Tom Cotton have advocated for the repeal of permanent normal trade relations with China. The lawmakers argue that this move is necessary to address what they describe as China's economic exploitation of the United States.
The op-ed highlights several issues attributed to China's trade practices, including job losses and intellectual property theft. "The Chinese Communist Party has destroyed millions of American jobs and stolen trillions of dollars in American intellectual property," the authors state. They further argue that "Beijing has forfeited its preferential trade status with the United States."
Moolenaar and Cotton propose legislation aimed at decoupling the U.S. economy from China’s influence. This includes implementing tariffs on Chinese goods over five years, with a focus on strategically vital imports. The plan also suggests using tariff revenue to support businesses affected by potential Chinese retaliation and strengthening U.S. military capabilities.
The lawmakers criticize past assumptions about China's economic integration leading to greater freedom within the country. "Instead, the Chinese Communist Party is more repressive, and the Chinese people are less free," they assert.
They also express their intent to collaborate with President-elect Donald Trump and Congress to reshape U.S.-China relations: "We look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump and the incoming Congress to begin a new chapter in US-China relations."
