Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III engaged in discussions with Israeli Minister of Defense Israel Katz on December 11, 2024. The dialogue focused on regional developments and the United States' commitment to Israel's security.
According to Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, Secretary Austin highlighted the significance of the ceasefire accepted by Israel and Lebanese Hizballah on November 26. He mentioned its potential to restore calm and enable residents near the Israel-Lebanon border to return home safely.
"The Secretary reiterated that the United States is consulting closely with our international partners to support the implementation of the ceasefire," said Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.
Additionally, Secretary Austin assured Minister Katz of U.S. vigilance regarding events in Syria and affirmed support for a peaceful political transition there while continuing efforts against ISIS.
"Secretary Austin emphasized the importance of close consultation between the United States and Israel on events in Syria," stated Ryder.
Austin also stressed the U.S.'s dedication to securing the release of hostages in Gaza, including American citizens, and urged improvements in humanitarian conditions there.
