Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken held a meeting in Ankara with Turkish President Recep Erdoğan to address recent developments in Syria. The discussions centered on U.S.-Turkish cooperation and mutual interests in fostering a Syrian-led political transition towards an accountable government.
Blinken highlighted the importance of respecting human rights, adhering to international humanitarian law, and protecting civilians, including minority groups. He stressed the necessity of facilitating humanitarian aid to those in need and underscored the ongoing protection required for displaced Syrians.
The Secretary also emphasized maintaining the coalition's efforts against ISIS, ensuring its mission continues effectively. Additionally, he addressed the urgent need for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza that would secure hostage releases and enhance humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians.
"Secretary Blinken discussed strong U.S.-Turkish regional cooperation and our shared interest in supporting a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition to an accountable and inclusive government," stated Spokesperson Matthew Miller.
He reiterated "the importance of all actors in Syria respecting human rights, upholding international humanitarian law, and taking all feasible steps to protect civilians, including members of minority groups."
Miller further conveyed Blinken's emphasis on "the need to ensure the coalition to defeat ISIS can continue to execute its critical mission" and his discussion on "the urgent need to conclude a ceasefire agreement in Gaza that secures the release of hostages and surges humanitarian assistance to vulnerable Palestinian civilians."
