Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pederson met to discuss the ongoing challenges in Syria. Secretary Blinken emphasized the importance of a Syrian-led transition with significant involvement from the United Nations, particularly in providing assistance and protecting minorities. He stated, "It’s a pleasure to meet with Special Envoy Pederson from the UN to talk about the challenges that we face – indeed, face together – in Syria; our determination to work together to support a Syrian-led transition where the United Nations plays a critical role."
Blinken expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Pederson and support the Syrian people during this period of both opportunity and challenge, guided by UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
Special Envoy Pederson echoed Blinken's sentiments, stressing the necessity of a credible and inclusive political process in Syria. He remarked, "My message has been very clear the last few days, and that is what is so critical in Syria is that we see a credible and inclusive political process that brings together all of Syria, all communities in Syria."
Pederson also highlighted the urgency of maintaining state institutions and delivering humanitarian aid swiftly. He added, "And if we can achieve that, perhaps there is a new opportunity for the Syrian people."
The meeting underscored their shared commitment to addressing these issues collaboratively.
