The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has launched an advertising campaign urging Congress to pass the Repealing Big Brother Overreach Act. This proposed legislation aims to overturn the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) and its associated beneficial ownership information (BOI) reporting rule. The campaign features targeted radio and digital ads across several states.
NFIB President Brad Close emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “December 31st marked the deadline Congress set for more than 32 million small businesses to file private and personal data with a new federal registry or face the possibility of up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine.” He added that although a federal court recently blocked this law, Congress should make this victory permanent by passing the Repealing Big Brother Overreach Act to protect privacy and relieve small business owners from what he described as a dangerous law.
A lawsuit filed by NFIB led to a federal court issuing a preliminary injunction against the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), preventing them from enforcing the CTA’s BOI reporting requirements. NFIB supports repealing these requirements through new legislation.
