The United States has extended its congratulations to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Government of The Gambia following a significant decision by ECOWAS Heads of State and Government. They have approved the establishment of a Special Tribunal for The Gambia.

This tribunal is set to address gross human rights violations and international crimes that occurred between July 1994 and January 2017, during the dictatorship of Yahya Jammeh.

"The Gambia has shown admirable courage in facing its past and committing to a democratic future," stated Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson. He added, "We commend ECOWAS for its leadership and commitment to human rights and justice."

Miller emphasized that the United States looks forward to collaborating with partners in The Gambia and ECOWAS to ensure justice for victims while contributing to lasting peace in West Africa.
