US offers support after Vanuatu earthquake impacts embassy operations

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The United States has expressed condolences to those impacted by the recent earthquake in Vanuatu. Officials are monitoring the situation and are prepared to offer assistance in collaboration with Australia, New Zealand, and other regional partners.

The U.S. Embassy Port Vila chancery building is currently unsuitable for operations. Options are being assessed to continue diplomatic work in Vanuatu. All staff from the U.S. Embassy, along with Peace Corps personnel and volunteers, have been confirmed safe. Efforts are underway to determine if any U.S. citizens were affected, with consular assistance ready to be provided if necessary.

U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP.state.gov) for critical safety updates. Those requiring assistance can reach out via email at consularportmoresby@state.gov.
