U.S. Attorney Adair F. Boroughs | U.S. Department of Justice

Tyrek Jacquez Carroway, a 25-year-old resident of Columbia, South Carolina, has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison. Carroway pleaded guilty to charges involving the distribution of over 50 grams of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm linked to drug trafficking activities.

According to court evidence, undercover agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted 12 controlled narcotic purchases from Carroway between November 2022 and May 2023. It was revealed that he trafficked drugs from Texas and Georgia into South Carolina using hidden compartments in his vehicle. He faced responsibility for distributing various drugs including methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and crack cocaine. During 10 out of the 12 controlled purchases, Carroway was found possessing or selling firearms while committing drug-related crimes.

United States District Judge Sherri Lydon imposed a sentence of 180 months imprisonment on Carroway. Following his prison term, he will be under five years of court-ordered supervision. It is noted that parole is not an option in the federal system.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering cooperation among different levels of law enforcement and communities. The Department launched a strategy on May 26, 2021, focusing on trust-building in communities, supporting preventive community-based organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating results.

The investigation was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alongside the West Columbia Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elle E. Klein is handling the prosecution.
