Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder issued a statement detailing a recent phone conversation between Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Qatar's newly appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs, His Excellency Sheikh Saoud Al Thani.
The discussion aimed to reaffirm the defense partnership between the United States and Qatar, explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation in defense, and address regional security issues.
Secretary Austin highlighted the Department of Defense's dedication to promoting regional stability through deterrence and diplomacy. This includes efforts to support the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, maintain the defeat of ISIS, and reduce Houthi military threats affecting commerce in the Red Sea.
Additionally, Secretary Austin stressed the importance of securing the release of hostages held by Hamas and achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.
